Following some loose cuts over the past few months, Kevin Gates unveils his new full-length Only The Generals, Pt. II, a presumed follow-up to his EP Only The Generals Gon Understand. The project sees 12 tracks from the Baton Rouge emcee, along with production assistance from Pancho, Outtatown, DJ Frank E, DMacTooBangin, Danny Wolf, Taz Taylor, Section 8, and more.
In addition to the aforementioned release, Gates also liberates a new visual for the standout track “Puerto Rico Luv,” an Olivier Bassil and MakeTheNoises-produced effort that sees the artist speaking on various ups and downs that have occurred within his life:
“Cartel boat, have you ever wanted to start over? Heavy on your back ‘til you start developing hard shoulders, standing upright independent, feelings never parched over/
2016, the system stripped me from my kids, punished me for penalties in which I didn’t commit, I suffered ‘cause I’m Muslim, racist judges, I forgive, like right after I ain’t go upstate and lay down on a bid…/”
The Nicky Films-directed clip keeps things simple, with Gates performing the multi-layered single in different, beautiful — and real — locations around Puerto Rico, including the beach and a detention center in Guaynabo.
Currently, Gates is said to be working on his third studio album Khaza, which will be his first official LP since 2019’s I’m Him, which landing within the Billboard 200’s top five thanks to 72,000 album equivalent units sold during its first week of release. The past couple of years have also seen him contributing to other notable songs like Juicy J’s “Let Me See,” Kodie Shane’s “Flewed Out,” Rod Wave’s “Cuban Links,” DaBaby’s “Pop Star,” Gucci Mane’s “Bucking The System,” and 2 Chainz’s “Ziploc.”
