Despite her fame and notoriety, Cardi B is a “regular, degular, shmegular” citizen of the United States who, like many people, have been thinking about the upcoming presidential election.
The rapper, who has been vocal about the importance of voting, sat down with presidential candidate Joe Biden for Elle and shared her wishes and expectations for the upcoming president.
To break the ice, Biden gave her permission to address him on a first name basis and joked they may be related since his daughter Ashley has nicknamed him “Joey B.” He went on to introduce them to each other, praised the “WAP” star for her recent Elle cover, and thanked her for her “generosity in dealing with people suffering from COVID[-19].” Then, he turned the mic over to Cardi.
“I have a whole list of things that I want our next president to do for us,” the rapper said. “But first, I just want Trump out. His mouth gets us in trouble so much.”
In the interview, Cardi voiced her concerns about the state of America and its effect on the people who live here. “I feel like this country is so hurt, to the point that this year, a lot of people couldn’t even celebrate July 4th, because not everybody feels like an American,” she explained. “A lot of people feel like [they’re] not even part of America.”
She also expressed the importance of going out to cast your vote and as a mother to her daughter Kulture, she made sure to fit in a few words about child care in America.
Cardi’s desire, she explained, is to have someone in office “to tell me what the steps are for us to get better” and who would provide free college tuition, free Medicare and “laws that are fair to Black citizens and that are fair for cops, too.”
Receptive to her answers, Biden agreed.“There’s no reason why we can’t have all of that Presidents have to take responsibility,” he told Cardi, adding that he would own up to any mistakes he makes if he becomes the President. “Just check me out; I’ve never broken my word,” he said. “Never in my life.”
The former Vice President also praised Cardi, stating “One of the things that I admire about you is that you keep talking about what I call equity — decency, fairness, and treating people with respect.”
Cardi B’s conversation with Biden comes after she revealed the news amid an interview with “The Breakfast Club.” Without giving away too much information at the time, she expressed her thoughts on the presidential candidate.
“I always felt like Biden balanced Obama because I thought he was conservative and that’s what swayed the conservative votes, the ones in the middle. Knowing him and everything, I think he’s getting it and I think he understands the people’s pain,” she said. “He’s getting what we want. People think we want so much, but we want really simple things if you really think about it.”
“I tried to let him know like, listen we don’t want no false promises,” she went on.” We don’t want no fake shit to get people voting. This is what we want. Please make it happen.”
