Tyler Perry is continuing to generously assist the family of the late Rayshard Brooks after he was fatally shot during an officer-involved shooting at a Wendy’s in Atlanta, Georgia. On Monday (June 15), REVOLT reported that Perry would be covering the funeral costs for Brooks. It is now being reported that he will also cover the college tuition for his four children: Blessing, Memory, Dream and his stepson Mekai.
According to PEOPLE, a source said that the media mogul “spoke to Rayshard’s family and wanted to do something to help. His heart goes out to the family during this tragic time.”
On Monday (June 15), Chris Stewart, the family’s attorney, shared the news that the A Fall From Grace director will cover Brooks’ funeral expenses. “We do want to acknowledge and thank Tyler Perry, who we spoke with [and] who will be taking care of the funeral for the family,” he said.
He continued, “It’s support like that and it’s people who are actually in this community that love the community, that want healing and families like this to never have to go through something like this, to step forward. And we want to thank him for such a generous move.”
Brooks was shot and killed on Friday (June 12) allegedly by Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe. Police say Brooks fell asleep in the Wendy’s drive-thru Friday night and failed a sobriety test. When they tried to take him into custody, he resisted and reportedly stole one of the police officers’ taser.
In the viral video of the incident, Brooks can be seen running from law enforcement. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Brooks aimed a taser at the officers before Rolfe fired his weapon.
Rolfe has since been terminated from his position and the other officer who was present on the scene has been placed on administrative duty. Brooks’ family is demanding that the former officer be charged for his death.
