On Tuesday (Aug. 11) Joe Biden announced Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate for the 2020 presidential election. Following the announcement, celebrities took to social media to send their congratulations and show their support for her.
“[Joe Biden] can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us,” Harris tweeted following the news. “And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals. I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”
Barack Obama sent his support for Harris, someone who he says is “more than prepared for the job.”
“I’ve known Senator @KamalaHarris for a long time,” Obama tweeted, alongside a touching message he penned to her. “She is more than prepared for the job. She’s spent her career defending our Constitution and fighting for folks who need a fair shake. This is a good day for our country. Now let’s go win this thing.”
LeBron James tweeted, “Congrats and well deserved Sen. Kamala Harris!! Love to see and support it! Appreciate you JB.”
John Legend took to Twitter to show his support for Harris. “Very happy for our friend and Senator and future Vice President @KamalaHarris and very much looking forward to voting for the Biden-Harris ticket to begin the difficult work of recovering from this nightmare presidency and building an even better future,” he tweeted.
If elected, Harris will become the first female, Black and Asian American vice president in the history of the United States. Biden and Harris will formally accept their Democratic nominations next week during the Democratic party convention, which will be held virtually. The two will make their first appearance together on Wednesday (Aug. 12) at an event in Delaware.
