Skrillex is really a jack of all trades when it comes to music — his fruitful career has seen him crafting hits into a multitude of genres, including hip hop and R&B. Today (August 20), he leans back into that realm with his latest single “Don’t Go,” a collaboration with Justin Bieber and Don Toliver that sees co-production from HARV. The track is essentially a love story that all listeners are sure to dance to upon pressing play:
“My Mona Lisa, baby, my masterpiece, bae, when I’m pieces, baby, you give me peace of mind, you tell me we’ll fine, you always get me right, when it’s dark you’re my light, baby, that’s why I need you on the regular, and if it wasn’t you, you know it would never work, got me goin’ out my way to show what you’re worth, don’t go…”
Directed by Salomon Ligthelm, the matching video for “Don’t Go” almost functions as a behind the scenes for the production. All three artists are seen together in different locations on what’s presumed to be the same set — in front of backdrop projecting different images, in a space surrounded by mirrors, in a room with a classic sports car, and more. Viewers can also see CGI’d versions of Skrillex & Co. while liquid gold flowing down their faces.
It’s been more than seven years since Skrillex released his debut LP Recess, which saw 11 tracks with additional features from Fatman Scoop, Ragga Twins, Chance The Rapper, Kid Harpoon, Niki & The Dove, Diplo, and more. That isn’t to say he’s been dormant since — the Los Angeles DJ/beatsmith has crafted a slew of hits since, including “Burial” with Yogi, Pusha T, Moody Good, and TrollPhace, “El Chapo” with The Game, ”Purple Lamborghini” with Rick Ross, “In da Getto” with J Balvin, and “Ego Death” with Ty Dolla $ign, Kanye West, and FKA Twigs.
