A trailer for the Joey Bada$$-starring film Two Distant Strangers has been released. The forthcoming live action short film follows cartoonist Carter James, played by Joey, who is enjoying the “best day” of his life after waking up in bed with a new love interest, played by Zaria Simone. However, the trailer notes, James’ best day turns out to also be his worst after he steps outside the woman’s building and is accosted by an aggressive police officer.
The cop, played by Andrew Howard, and a swarm of other officers violently wrestle James to the ground, kneel on top of him and kill him. James then wakes up abruptly back in the same woman’s bed, thinking the whole thing was just a terrible nightmare.
When he leaves the building again, however, the same officer approaches, and it seems that James is doomed to live the same day over and over again while the same officer continues to target him.
The film is set to be executive produced by Diddy and was written by Travon Free. Free also served as a director on the project, alongside Buzkashi Boys’ Martin Desmond Roe.
Joey, meanwhile, is no stranger to the big screen. The Brooklyn native previously starred in the 2014 short film No Regrets and had recurring roles on “Mr. Robot,” “Boomerang” and “Wu-Tang: An American Saga.” He’s most recently been seen on “The Eric Andre Show” and “grown-ish,” where he plays himself.
Last month, Joey was also revealed to be a cast member on 50 Cent’s third “Power” series, “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” which he celebrated in an Instagram post.
“2020 was full of many ups & downs but [past] all the hardship this was the best year of my life,” he wrote. “… From turning a quarter century (25), to dinners with Puff & JAY, cutting my hair, celebrating my daughters 2nd bday, dropping an EP, buying my dream car, getting a penthouse on the water, becoming a gym rat and landing a role on ‘Power Book 3’ plus many more personal life changing moments, maaaaaaan, I can’t imagine what 2021 is gonna bring.”
A release date for Two Distant Strangers has not yet been announced, but the film is reportedly “coming soon.” Watch the trailer below.
