Back in January, Jazmine Sullivan unveiled the conceptual EP Heaux Tales, a 14-track body of work with additional appearances from Ari Lennox, H.E.R., and Anderson .Paak, along with a slew of spoken word pieces — or “tales” — courtesy of Antoinette Henry, Precious Daughtry, Rashida Northington, and more. The project marked a big return for the Philadelphia songstress, landing at the number four spot on the Billboard 200 thanks to 47,000 album equivalent units sold during its first week of release.
This past weekend, Sullivan liberated a new visual from the project for the DXL-produced “Pick Up Your Feelings,” a defiant message to a lover who’s become unfaithful and is now experiencing the consequences that come with cheating:
“You said that I’ve been actin’ different, yeah, funny how I finally flipped the script on you, when you the one who’s double-dippin’, yeah, you so sloppy, how I caught you slippin’ up, you’re off the lease, run me my keys, no more poppin’ up to hit it, yeah, I ain’t even got the miles to trip on you…/”
The accompanying clip keeps things simple, with a breathtaking Sullivan performing the track with her band in front of an empty nightclub. A single man — a presumed love interest — looks on as if the words being sung are for him, walking towards the stage before being swiftly moved to the venue’s balcony by an unknown individual.
Heaux Tales follows Sullivan’s third studio LP Reality Show, which made landfall back in 2015 and saw a single contribution from fellow hometown hero Meek Mill. A critically acclaimed masterpiece, the album landed on may “best of” lists that year, and peaked on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts at 12 and 2, respectively.
