Jazmine Sullivan’s new Heaux Tales has been in heavy rotation for R&B lovers since its release, but now fans have been blessed with the opportunity to tune into a live version of one of its stand-out cuts “Girl Like Me.” Jazmine was featured on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to deliver a live rendition of the track, where she sings as she wonders what went wrong in her last love:
Wondering what I did to lose you? Why in the hell you ain’t choose me? Why you don’t love me no morе? And I don’t even know what for You must’vе wanted somethin’ different. Still don’t know what I was missin’. What you asked I would’ve given. It ain’t right how these hoes be winnin’. Why they be winnin’? No hope for a girl like me, how come they be winnin’? Yeah (Why they be? Why they be?) And I ain’t wanna be, but you gon’ make a hoe out of me.
“Girl Like Me” was released as a follow up to the well-received singles “Lost One” and “Pick Up Your Feelings,” and was originally announced last year via a promotional video that further explained the album’s concept:
“I wrote Heaux Tales to give a voice to every woman. We’re deserving of respect whether we work as a CEO of a company or we strippin’. … It’s about a woman deciding how she wants to present herself to the world and not being told or influenced by anyone but her gotdamn self…”
Heaux Tales will be Jazmine Sullivan’s latest album since 2015’s Reality Show, which contained 11 cuts and a single assist from fellow Philadelphia artist Meek Mill. Reality Show peaked at both the number 2 and 12 spots on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop and 200 albums charts, respectively. She can also be heard lending her God-given vocals to projects like PAUL by PJ Morton, The Best of Pentatonix Christmas, Ventura by Anderson .Paak, At What Cost by Goldlink, and HBO’s Insecure Season 2 official soundtrack on the song “Insecure” alongside Bryson Tiller.
