It’s been five years since the release of Jazmine Sullivan’s third studio LP Reality Show, which — including an iTunes bonus — saw 12 tracks and additional contributions from Meek Mill, Key Wane, DJ Dahi, The Internz, Babyface, Cocaine 80’s, and more. Now, the Philadelphia songstress returns with a new single titled “Lost One,” which centers on the realization that an individual has gone too far in regards to their relationship to turn back:
“You know when you lost one, a good one, you know when you lost one, you go out and f*** different people to cope and ignore all precautions, you drink and you drink and get faded, you feel like that’s your only options/
And if it’s too late, I understand, sometimes it’s too late, to make amends, just hear me out, before, you let it go, there is one thing, I need, for you to know…/”
Prior to Reality Show, Sullivan delivered her debut and sophomore LPs Fearless and Love Me Back in 2005 and 2010, respectively. In that same time frame, she contributed her voice to songs by Mary J. Blige, Frank Ocean, PJ Morton, and more.
“Lost One” follows Sullivan’s recent revelation about her mother’s cancer diagnosis, which she revealed via an Instagram post back in May:
“Late October 2019 our world was flipped upside down when U were diagnosed w IBC (inflammatory breast cancer). our days were no longer filled w convos of u telling me to hurry up and finish my project, but of chemo treatments and hospital visits. Shit got real, Fast. But if being your daughter has taught me one thing it is how to work w something ugly, painful even, and make it a work of art.”
