Last night (Oct. 19), fans were able to tune in to the first episode of the ABC series “Queens,” which stars Eve, Naturi Naughton, Nadine Velazquez, and Brandy as a former successful girl group looking to recreate the old days in their 40s. Earlier this month, the quartet gave fans a taste of what to expect with the booming cut “Nasty Girl,” complete with a cinematic visual to match — during the shows debut (titled “1999”), viewers were able to check out two additional tracks titled “The Introduction” and “Hear Me.”
“The Introduction” saw the ladies delivering some truly hard-hitting bars over the instrumental for Nas’ “Oochie Wally,” especially Brandy, who quickly reminded us all of her talents in regards to hip hop:
“My pen game is Saddam Hussein to your brain, so insane, I got ‘em in chains like a slave, never been afraid, go against the grain like a fade, a renegade, I blew up the lane like grenades, now what you know about writing every rhyme? Spittin’ every flow and bodying every line? I body everybody, my body of work shines, when it’s all said and done, I’m the greatest of all time…”
“Hear Me” takes a different turn, with Brandy back on her soulful vibes over an acoustic guitar. Both tracks also come with accompanying visuals that contains scenes from the aforementioned episode.
During a recent visit to “The Breakfast Club,” Naughton spoke further on the show’s premise:
“I would say “Queens” is about four women that used to be in a girl group back in the day … these women have lost their sense of self, they’ve lost their confidence, their swag, their sexiness, because they’re older. It’s like 20 years later. And they have this chance to become a group again because a young artist basically flips their song … it’s really about second chances.”
