Today (Oct. 1), fans are finally able to check out Meek Mill’s fifth studio LP Expensive Pain, which comes with 18 cuts and a slew of assists from Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Kehlani, A$AP Ferg, Moneybagg Yo, Giggs, Young Thug, Vory, Lil Uzi Vert, and Brent Faiyaz. Accompanying the album are two visuals for “Intro (Hate On Me)” and “On My Soul.”
“Intro (Hate On Me)” sees production from Johnny Juliano, Yung Exclusive, and Cardo and borrows from Nas and Diddy’s classic 90’s cut “Hate Me Now” — a perfect backdrop for Meek’s hard-hitting bars about all weapons formed against him:
“Rockin’ Dior, I still remember me poor, I’m tryna get more, welcome to Philly where niggas get smoked for real tryna slide to the store, send ‘em with the stick, ghost the minivan stoley, slide with the door, nigga gon’ die in the streets so we can’t even beef, I’ma die on the fours…”
The video for “Intro” perfectly matches the subject matter, with shots of Meek moving around the City of Brotherly Love with his crew, all interspersed with in-your-face indications of his current success. Essentially, it’s the Dream Chasers movement at its absolute finest.
The second visual for “On My Soul” mixes footage of Meek & Co. taking over the streets on dirtbikes and four-wheelers with old and new cameos of the rapper with many of his peers — Drake, EST Gee, 42 Dugg, JAY-Z, and more can be seen throughout. It’s all pretty powerful imagery for a song that sees Meek singing his heart out about his journey from rags to riches, and how he’ll do everything he can to protect his and his family’s peace:
“Sittin’ in the Phantom, countin’ money in the sun, everybody in my hood know I’m the one, made it out the trenches, leave ten million for my son, they said it’s the difference, it feel different how I come…”
