One of the pro-Trump rioters who breached the U.S. Capitol wants to be forgiven for his role in Wednesday’s (Jan. 6) deadly insurrection.

Josiah Colt — who was photographed hanging off the side of the Senate balcony and standing behind House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s podium — has apologized for his actions via a statement to CBS2 News.

“I recognize my actions that have brought shame upon myself, my family, my friends and my beautiful country,” he said. “In the moment, I thought I was doing the right thing. I realize now that my actions were inappropriate, and I beg for forgiveness from America and my home state of Idaho.”

In his apology, Colt declared his love for America and its people, admitting he got “caught up in the moment.” He noted that he “didn’t hurt anyone” or “cause any damage in the Chamber,” and insisted that he even tried to prevent the other rioters from wrecking the government building.

“I told the other protesters that this is a sacred place and not to not do any damage,” he said. “Some of them wanted to trash the place and steal stuff, but I told them not to and to leave everything in it’s place. We’re still on sacred ground….My intention wasn’t to put a stain on our great country’s democratic process.”

Colt’s plea for forgiveness comes after he and other pro-Trump rioters forcibly entered the U.S. Capitol Hill, ravaging various offices and posing for photos throughout the government building. The Trump supporter documented his feelings in a video posted on social media following the siege.

“I just got in, I just got into the Capitol Building,” he said at the time. “I was the first one. I hopped down into the chamber, and I was the first on to sit in Nancy Pelosi’s [chair]. That bitch, she’s a traitor, she’s treasonous.”

He has since deleted his social media accounts, according to CBS2 News.
