Despite his massive success thanks to the Netflix series “Rhythm & Flow,” D Smoke’s Black Habits — his official debut album that was released back in February — might be one of the most slept-on releases this year. Following amazing visuals for “No Commas” and “Black Habits I,” the Inglewood emcee reveals a new clip for “Gaspar Yanga,” named after an African freedom fighter that lived during Spanish colonial rule in the Americas. The D Smoke and Thomas Cauley-produced cut features west coast legend Snoop Dogg and sees the artist flexing his lyrical ability in both English and Spanish, seemingly possessing the title of the song’s namesake:

“Am I wrong for puttin’ us on? You would if you could, in my zone, they leave me alone, I’m good in the ‘Wood/

Grey poupon, it’s in the cologne, my foot on your jug’, throwin’ stones, you never atone, now look at you/

Supero mitos, rico, jugando ese juego with the cheat code, las salud es llave, vengo de grandes principios…/”

The visual sees D Smoke getting shot by an apparent enemy…with the aid of Snoop, he is able to exact his revenge by fire. The collaborators’ chemistry is notable in the clip, given their initial connection seen by viewers during Smoke’s debut appearance on “Rhythm & Flow.” He explained his first run-in with Snoop during a recent interview on Talib Kweli’s “People’s Party” podcast series:

“I think before I said I was from Inglewood, I think he already wanted to ask… And I think that speaks to the energy and the authenticity behind what I presented in my art, in my performance. Snoop didn’t ask anybody else that, which means he was moved in a different way. In his world, he’s familiar with that energy coming from that place.”
