Over the weekend, James Blake liberated his fifth studio LP Friends That Break Your Heart, a 12-track offering that sees additional appearances from SZA, JID, SwaVay, and Monica Martin. Yesterday (Oct. 11), the British artist-musician decided to upgrade the the standout cut “Funeral” with a new verse courtesy of slowthai. Co-produced by KHUSHI, “Funeral (Remix)” sees the two bringing forth melancholic themes of loneliness and death:

“I never been one for horror movies, I fall asleep under your tongue, I hope you choose me, the shadow silhouetting the sun, I’m glued to your feet, I live in the shadows of, mmm, under the loose leaves, I spread my wings, I got a nose bleed, I been the dust on top of trophies, the rust that makes it homely, the crust that no one wants, I was forgotten, I’ve gone mouldy…”

The black-and-white video for “Funeral (Remix)” matches the song’s subject matter with what appears to be a funeral procession in progress. In between shots of others in varying states of emotion, Blake and slowthai can be seen standing around as the convoy of vehicles remain still — they eventually receive a food delivery at the clip’s end.

Friends That Break Your Heart follows last year’s EPs Before and Covers, the latter of which saw Blake putting his own spin on songs by Frank Ocean, Billie Eilish, Joy Division, Stevie Wonder, and Beyoncé. Prior to that, he liberated the album Assume Form in 2019, which featured collaborations alongside Travis Scott, Metro Boomin, Moses Sumney, Rosalía, and André 3000. In addition to being a top ten success on the UK Albums chart, Assume Form also landed just outside of the top 20 of the Billboard 200 following its first week of release.
