Kevin Abstract makes his solo return today (July 16) with his freshly released single “SLUGGER.” For the track, he recruited two dope assists, $NOT and slowthai. Abstract co-produced it with Al Hug and fellow Brockhampton member Romil Hemnani, and also made sure the release was paired with a visual. On his opening verse, Kevin references a few fallen Hip Hop legends:
Shawty wanna be a thug, he on his ‘Pac shit, I make ‘em wait for it, no time for watching (Watch ya head)/ Had to put my foot down, tell that bitch, “Go mind your business”/ Sip-a-sip-a-sip until a n***a feel it, uh
I be in my head, sometimes it’s hard to talk, I be like my dog, ‘cause sometimes it’s hard to walk/ Yeah, a n***a got these thoughts, but ain’t never been soft/ I been takin’ n***a down since a n***a was small, o R.I.P. to Pimp C, R.I.P. to Pimp C
The video starts off with scenes of Kevin vibing with his friends in the living room, relaxed to the fullest. Then, as the song picks up in tempo, the energy of the video kicks up as well. The last full-length solo project we’ve received from Kevin Abstract was 2019’s ARIZONA BABY, and before that was 2016’s American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story.
$NOT most recently dropped off his “Red” single and at the top of April, he shared a visual for “Life” from his recent project Beautiful Havoc. He has also delivered other videos from the same body of work “Like Me” with iann dior and “Sangria” with Denzel Curry. In February, slowthai unveiled his sophomore LP TYRON, a 14-song, chart-topping masterpiece that sees additional assists from A$AP Rocky, Skepta, Kwes Darko, Denzel Curry, James Blake, and more.
