After years of displaying her lyrical genius on record-breaking and award-winning tracks, Nicki Minaj continues to be a highly-desired feature for many artists. During a recent conversation on Twitter Spaces, the Queens emcee revealed she was asked to jump on Doja Cat’s “Get Into It (Yuh),” but she declined.
“The truth is, she asked me to get on that song,” Nicki said. “It’s not that I’m too busy at all. It’s just, there were middle people involved in that situation, so I had told her, if it was like how me and BIA were direct, and we dealt with each other directly, it would be different.
“But I didn’t love that song because I didn’t think I could bring anything to it. So I asked them to send me something else. I think that was the second song they sent me, but I asked them to send me something else, and they didn’t send me anything else.”
Nicki explained that at this point in her career, she no longer wants to “do shit just to do shit.” Therefore, she is more intentional about what songs she decides to do a feature on.
“So right now, there are a lot of artists, I’m talking about artists that I really like, that ask for us to do a feature,” she said. “And I just told all of them like, ‘Yo, let’s really get the right thing.’ ’Cause right now, it’s a different everything for me. I don’t wanna just do shit just to do shit. And especially with artists that I love and stuff, I really wanna make a moment with them that’s gonna last.”
Nicki’s previous collaboration with a female emcee came back in July when she revealed that she hopped on the remix to BIA’s “Whole Lotta Money.” Her decision, however, wasn’t made right away. As the star revealed, she’d already been a fan of the original song and didn’t think it needed any features. However, when she reached out to applaud her for the single’s success, she noticed that BIA had contacted her numerous times to ask for her contribution to the track. After a few conversations and some bonding and studio time, the two formed a friendship, which made for a seamless collaboration.
