Doja Cat has been tapped to host the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).
The Planet Her singer took to Instagram on Wednesday (Aug. 25) to announce the news. “I’m hosting the 2021 #VMAs this year. Wowowowowowow,” she captioned the post. This will be Doja’s first time hosting an awards show. Not only will she serve as emcee of the night, but she will also take the stage to perform. Doja is nominated for five awards, including Video Of The Year, for her SZA-assisted single “Kiss Me More,” and Artist Of The Year.
Justin Bieber leads this year’s nominees with seven nods, followed by Megan Thee Stallion with six nods. “WAP,” the Houston Hottie’s collaboration with Cardi B, is nominated for several of those awards, including Video Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Collaboration and Best Hip Hop Song. She is also up for Artist Of The Year.
Several artists will hit the stage at the VMAs, including Lil Nas X, Lorde, Olivia Rodrigo, Machine Gun Kelly, Foo Fighters, Shawn Mendes and Chloe Bailey, who will be making her solo debut with a performance of her first single, “Have Mercy.”
Last year, the VMAs were primarily pre-taped and were not held in front of a live audience. This year, executives are working to make sure COVID guidelines are followed and everyone is safe.
“MTV and Barclays Center are working closely with state and local officials to implement best practices and execute a screen-breaking spectacle that brings together music fans from around the globe with the health and safety of our artists, fans, staff and partners remaining the No. 1 priority,” event organizers previously said in a statement.
The VMAs are set to air live from the Barclays Center on Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Check out Doja’s post below.
