Back in February, Kevin Gates unveiled his latest project Only the Generals, Pt. II, which boasts 12 hard-hitting tracks from the Baton Rouge star. Today, he drops off a new visual from the aforementioned release for “Cartel Swag,” a Andrew Cedar, Danny Majic, DJ Frank E, and KC Supreme-produced effort that sees him on a stream-of-consciousness about loyalty, taking risks, women, and more:
“Seen you starin’ at me, but you afraid to be for me, makin’ your parents happy, made ‘em believe, Major League, check my batting average, I worked my way to bricks from crumbs, you know that ain’t average/
I took the diamonds out of my teeth, but my earrings is dancin, I cut off my hoes, I got a new thang, and that bitch make me happy, and I know she see me watchin’, loft chillin’ on the carpet…/”
The accompanying clip for “Cartel Swag” comes courtesy of Nicky Films and — like much of his content over the past few months — sees Kevin Gates living his life to the fullest in Puerto Rico. Throughout, Gates lights cigars and sage for atmospheric effect, enjoying fine dining, shows off his jewelry, and much more.
Only the Generals, Pt. II follows 2019’s Only the Generals Gon Understand, which saw six cuts and debuted high on the Billboard 200, as well as Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums charts. That same year also saw the release of Gates’ sophomore studio album I’m Him, a 17-track tour de force that peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200 thanks to 72,000 album equivalent units sold during its first week of release. I’m Him has also since earned Gates a well-reserved Gold plaque. Currently, he’s said to be putting the finishing touches on the forthcoming LP Khaza.
