After years of advocating for Black lives on the frontlines, Tamika Mallory is taking her fight against racial injustice to the literary world. The award-winning social activist is preparing for the release of her first book, S tate of Emergency, which is set to hit stands on May 11.
Mallory has made her mark as a passionate, dedicated activist, spearheading the 2017 Women’s March as well as many Black Lives Matter-themed demonstrations. Her social justice organization, Until Freedom, has played a vital role in keeping Breonna Taylor’s name alive, and her work has generally influenced a new generation of activists.
In her literary debut, Mallory pulls from all her years of experience and offers strategies to tackle systemic racism and “continue the country’s onward advancement and momentum toward true equality and social justice.”
“This country can’t undo the gross atrocities and inner and outer scars committed against the Black, brown, indigenous and immigrant lives that were sacrificed for the benefit of its creation, development and rise,” Mallory said in a written statement.
“But it is now clear that we, the people who have toiled, sacrificed and contributed an indelible handprint from the soil to the soul of this nation, will no longer tolerate the continual systemic injustice, inequality, inequity and indignities against the communities our government never bothered to correct. We’re owed the same American Dream of this nation as those who seek the haven of it, and the time is now.”
State of Emergency will be released under Black Privilege Publishing — Charlamagne Tha God’s new publishing imprint with Simon & Schuster’s Atria Books — which will focus on amplifying Black and brown voices in the publishing marketplace.
“Queen Tamika Mallory is my leader. If you’re a Black person in America, she’s your leader, too. Tamika is one of those people who’s ALWAYS on the frontlines fighting for us — not for self-serving reasons, but because she cares about Black people,” said Charlamagne. “State of Emergency is going to immortalize her words and give Black people a study guide that will help us navigate our way to true freedom.”
