Just before the new year arrived, Boy Better Know general Jammer unveiled his latest body of work Natural Selection, which sees 13 cuts and additional assists from Tyrell Trey, D Double E, Wiley, Jme, Biggaman, and more. The project was also accompanied by dope visual releases for “The Jerk Man” and “Ain’t The Same.” While still very much Grime-oriented, this release definitely sees Jammer experimenting further into other genres, making for one of the more distinctive records in recent time.

Another standout from Natural Selection is the hard-hitting “Grime Boy,” which is produced by Cosmos and features “Lord Of The Mics” collaborator SBK. Simply put, it’s tracks like this that remind listeners why Jammer is a thing of legend within his genre (and music overall, period):

“Copy and paste flow, they ain’t got lyrics like me or no say-so, spin an MC on the radio, man have been a soldier boy before Draco, see me with Double and Halo, and I flow nice with the ting like Kano/

Man’s with (Cosmos) in the studio, workin’, man go hard, never soft like Play-Doh, I was a grime boy, now I’m a grime man…/”

Natural Selection follows last year’s EP Distant Drip, a quarantine-perfect offering that saw five tracks and a single feature from New World Ray. In addition to that, 2020 also saw infectious loose singles from Jammer like “Smoke,” “Rain,” “Chattins,” and “Hope Dealers,” the last of which is a tribute to Black The Ripper — a man who tragically passed on last April. Around that time, he also reunited with his BBK cohorts on the posse cut “Red Card,” which appeared on Frisco’s The Familiar Stranger.
