Just before the year closes out, Saskilla blesses his fans with a new album titled Godson 1.8, which boasts 10 tracks and additional appearances from Maxsta, JamKvy, Scrufizzer, Nasty Jack, Devilman, Crazy Titch, and more. A pure grime offering, the opening track “Hello I’m Saskilla” is a perfect introduction for anyone who’s not familiar with one of the best artists in the game:

“Hello I’m Saskilla, you know my name, godson of grime, I killed this game, last year, man got a million streams, I ain’t tryna hear what anyone’s saying, me and Tex Dixon did Safe EP, and the whole grime scene had to change their lane…/”

Alongside Godson 1.8’s release, Saskilla took to social media to further explain the importance of its release for a scene that’s become diluted over time:

“The scene needed this album we needed to remember what REAL GRIME actually is not the shit on the commercial radio … THANK ME LATER.”

Godson 1.8 is presumed to be a continuation of 2016’s Godson of Grime and 2017’s Godson 1.5, two classic bodied of work that saw the British star collaborating alongside the likes of Rick Ross, Wiley, Gunplay, Tre Mission, and Manga Saint Hilare. As mentioned in the above lyric, Saskilla really made waves with Safe, a five-track EP that was created alongside fellow South Londoner Ten Dixon. More recently, Saskilla and Ten Dixon delivered a six-track sequel to Safe in August of last year.

In a country that’s recently seen huge gains in hip hop and drill music, Saskilla joins peers like D Double E, Footsie, and Boy Better Know as one of the bigger artists keeping the grime scene alive — a genre that’s since expanded in different variations around the world. It’s hopeful that there’s plenty more to come from the self-proclaimed godson in 2021.
