On September 18, Joyner Lucas will release his new EP Evolution, a project that was initially announced on his 32nd birthday last month. Following Lucas’ freestyle over Jack Harlow’s “WHATS POPPIN” comes a new single titled “Fall Slowly,” which sees him detailing a passionate-yet-toxic relationship:
“I love you more than I love myself, if you weren’t with me I couldn’t picture you with someone else, and every time we separate it’s like we under spells, ’cause when we hurt each other we come back to help each other heal/
You say I’m crazy, but at least you know my love is real, but s***, you crazy too, and that’s why they say love is hell, and it’s forever, so I hope you never up and bail, and if you ever left me for someone, you gon’ get someone killed…/”
The Ben Proulx-directed visual brings those lyrics to life, with Ashanti playing the role of Lucas’ love interest so convincingly that it feels like it’s only a matter of time before the couple bring their relationship to the forefront. Within that, the viewer sees the beautiful moments of their physical and mental bond, as well as the ugly moments — including scenes of the couple fighting and Lucas ultimately being arrested following an argument.
Evolution will follows Joyner Lucas’ debut studio LP ADHD, which was released back in March and saw 18 tracks will additional appearances from Logic, Young Thug, Chris Brown, Timbaland, Fabolous, and more. The album also boasted a slew of singles that had been released over the last couple of years, including “I Love,” “Devil’s Work,” “ISIS,” “Lotto,” and the Will Smith tribute “Will.” He later released a remix to “Will” that saw an appearance from legendary Philly rapper himself.
