Last year was a banner year for the man that now goes as simply Cordae, following the release of his debut album The Lost Boy and a slew of collaborations with the likes of Logic, Curren$y, Denzel Curry, and H.E.R., the last of whom brought him onstage during the BET Awards. Now, the Maryland star celebrates his 23rd birthday with a brand new single titled “Gifted,” which features Compton artist Roddy Ricch and sees the two reflecting on their current successes:
“Uh, I got a whole lotta people that’s been countin’ on me, got this bad lil’ shawty goin’ down on the D, I met shorty and we connected like the WiFi, hopped in the Phantom, disappeared like, ‘Voila’/
I told n***as that I would make it, they said, “no way,” watch them n***as that might eat up off of your plate, they caught me slidin’ on the E-Way with the heat on the seat I got tennis chains with crosses but I still keep a piece…/”
The track also comes with a dope visual courtesy of Cole Bennett and Lyrical Lemonade. The clip begins with Cordae in California driving a bucket before switching to high-end luxury with his collaborator. The clip ends with a tribute to Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Elijah McCain, and Jacob Blake, along with a powerful message from Huey P. Newton:
“The revolution has always been in the hands of the young. The young always inherit the revolution.”
The Lost Boy was released in July of 2019, and boasts 15 tracks and appearances from Meek Mill, Arin Ray, Pusha T, Ty Dolla $ign, Anderson .Paak, and Chance The Rapper. Prior to that, he was an active member of Young Boss N***as alongside YBN Nahmir and YBN Almighty Jay, contributing to the collective’s YBN: The Mixtape in 2018.
