Back in April, DaBaby delivered his third studio album Blame It On Baby, which saw 13 new tracks from the North Carolinian star and featured appearances from A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Megan Thee Stallion, Future, Quavo, and more. The project also earned DaBaby his second number one album, thanks to 124,000 equivalent album units sold.
One of the bigger standouts from the project was “Rockstar,” which features assistance from Roddy Ricch — that track soared to the top of its respective Billboard chart as well, another first for DaBaby and Roddy’s second since “The Box.” Now, DaBaby has decided to upgrade the track given the current state of affairs, showing love to the Black Lives Matter movement with a new verse:
“Oh, there they go by us, they pushin’ negative narratives, I’m ready though, cops wanna pull me over, embarrass me/
Abusin’ power, you never knew me, thought I was arrogant, as a juvenile, police pulled their guns like they scared of me/
And we’re used to how crackers treat us, now that’s the scary thing, want anything we good at and we cherish it/
Now we all fed up and n***as comin’ back for everything, rockstars, n***a, just watch the news, they burnin’ cop cars, n***a/
Kill another n***a, break the law, then call us outlaws, n***a…/”
A week prior to the song release, fans got to hear DaBaby’s powerful, socially charged bars via social media, where it played it during an apparent studio session:
In addition to adding to hip hop’s growing push against racism, police brutality, and oppression overall, the remix will almost certainly assist with keeping the young collaborators at the top of the charts in subsequent weeks.
