Back in 2017, Jaden Smith delivered his debut studio album SYRE, which contained 17 tracks and features from A$AP Rocky and Raury. Essentially, the project solidified Jaden’s position as a talented emcee within hip hop culture — it even brought his father, Will Smith, back to the recording booth for a subsequent remix of the runaway hit “Icon.” Today, he reveals a visual from the project for “Ninety,” which is produced by Lido and provided the listener with alternating views of a lover:
“When I open my eyes, I wish to see you, but your phone doesn’t ring and you’re gone all the time/
Well I guess you’re somewhere with your crew, isn’t the first time, but the worst time, and I’m feeling so blue/
You sit in your room and you listen to tunesAnd I’m feeling embarrassed, it’s true, you out there in Paris with who? When I open my eyes/
I wish to see you, but your phone doesn’t ring and you’re gone all the time/”
Speaking to Complex, Jaden spoke on why he’s utilized his first name only moving forward:
You want to know why? Because Willow’s name is ‘just Willow.’ And everything is a character. I feel like I had to separate the things that I do as different characters. So, Jaden Smith is the guy that does the vegan food truck in L.A., and gets that out to the homeless people, and does the Water Box in Flint, and starts Just Water, and sits down with Al Gore. Jaden is just a musical artist. You want to know why? Because Willow’s name is ‘just Willow.’ And everything is a character.
