Westside Gunn has shared his final text message conversation with Fred The Godson, who tragically passed away yesterday from COVID-19 (April 23). The Griselda rapper, who also suffered from the novel virus himself, had reached out to Fred on April 6, when Fred’s wife had first announced his positive test results.
“Sending my love G, I had it too I already know what u feel like,” Westside had texted him. “I didn’t tell anybody but sh*t I thought I was a goner I finally got to hold my son last night again for the first time in weeks ur gonna shake that sh*t.”
Prior to the message, Fred had reached out to Westside to congratulate him on his “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” performance.
In the post’s caption, Westside asked for payers for his aunt, who has also been diagnosed with Coronavirus.
“I don’t like showing messages but damn I FU*KIN HATE THIS CORONA sh*t,” he wrote on Instagram. “My Aunt Michelle who raised me my whole life who introduced me to Hip Hop is in the hospital right now on the machine, sh*t almost took me out, I promise u they killing alot of us, today a bad day for me just say a prayer for my aunt.”
Westside revealed that he’d contracted and beaten COVID-19 on April 12, just days before he released his new album, Pray For Paris. The Buffalo-bred rapper, who had been suffering in silence from the disease, previously wrote on Instagram that he’d been hospitalized and felt like he was going to take his “last breath.”
Earlier this week, Fred’s publicist reported that the Payback rapper’s kidneys had stopped functioning, but that his heart and vital signs had improved. Fred’s wife previously shared promising news, when he’d begun breathing on his own after help from a ventilator.
Besides Westside, several rappers and members of the hip hop community remembered Fred on social media yesterday (April 23). We continue to send our deep condolences to his wife and children.
