Big Tigger is hoping to highlight some exclusive hip hop moments with a special edition of his popular video show. On Thursday (Sept. 30), the radio personality took to Instagram to announce that “Rap City” will be making a return.
“This is not a drill…This is not a throwback…,” he wrote alongside a picture with him on set of the show. “#Rap City 21!! Details soon…”
“Rap City” originally premiered on BET in 1989, giving mainstream and underground rappers a platform to discuss their projects and premiere their new videos. In 1999, Big Tigger took over the show later titled “Rap City: Tha Basement,” taking things to another level straight from his mother’s basement.
The show saw rappers take the booth alongside the personality to display their lyricism with freestyles that live on YouTube to this day.
More than a decade after the show’s 2008 cancellation, Big Tigger and BET are teasing fans, but the special edition is by no means a return of a whole new show. According to a press release, “Rap City” is a one-hour segment that will only take place before the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards. Tigger will temporarily bring fans back to the old days with the recreation of the show and will reportedly air exclusive interviews, moments and freestyles from his “Rap City: Tha Basement” days.
“I’m excited at the opportunity to revive this legendary piece of culture!” Big Tigger said in a statement. “All your favorite stars and their bars on display.”
While fans await “Rap City ‘21,” fans of the show will get a similar experience on “Off Top,” Tigger’s new show with Rapsody and DJ Nyla Symone. Much like “Rap City,” artists talk with the hosts before hitting the booth to freestyle.
“Rap City ‘21” is slated to air Oct. 5 at 8 PM/ET on BET. Look below to see Big Tigger’s post.
