After nearly 30 decades in radio, Kurt “Big Boy” Alexander of Real 92.3’s “Big Boy’s Neighborhood” will get his own Hollywood star. The legend will receive the honor in the category of radio in front of the Amoeba Music record store in Hollywood Boulevard after a few words from presenter Dr. Dre.
Big Boy started his career deejaying at parties and serving as bodyguard for 90s hip hop group The Pharcyde before he befriended The Baka Boyz, who were morning show hosts at L.A.’s “Power 106” KPWR. With no internship experience, the personality took on a gig where he was responsible for hosting nights and afternoon, eventually earning buzz for his morning show.
After 20 years, the show — which is now called “Big Boy’s Neighborhood” — moved to Real 92.3 and became syndicated by Premiere Networks, while the personality won multiple Personality of the Year awards and was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2015.
Despite his accomplishments, however, Big Boy revealed that he was surprised by the news that he’d be getting his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“Even through my career in being in radio for the last 27 years, it was never any, there’s some things where you’re like, ‘Oh I wanna get this’ or ‘Hopefully I wanna get that,’ but a star was totally something that I would, I didn’t think that was going to be possible for me,” he told KTLA 5. “And not that I thought, ‘Oh you’re not worthy,’ I just didn’t think that I would have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It wasn’t one of those things where I was in my head like, ‘One Day.’ And I got a lot of thoughts, and they come true, but that one, not at all.”
Aa a fan of Dre, Big Boy said that it was “huge” for him to know that the West Coast legend was willing to present him with a star. He also expressed excitement about hearing George Lopez, who also agreed to talk about him during the ceremony.
Big Boy is slated to receive his Hollywood star tomorrow (Sept. 8) on his 52nd birthday.
“‘Big Boy’ is L.A.’s pride and joy and a hero to his listeners,” said Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “We are thrilled to honor him on his special birthday and welcome him to our Walk of Fame family.”
