Between the promo, the introduction from announcer Bruce Buffer, the on-stage jokes and the immaculate performances, The LOX and Dipset battle was one of the best and most entertaining Verzuz competitions to date. The night was a great reminder of an older time in hip hop, and for those in a younger generation, a history lesson on the discographies of two New York rap groups who still music today. Hundreds of thousands tuned into the event, but as with every Verzuz, some couldn’t watch it live. Fortunately, for those who missed the live viewing, Fat Joe has the perfect recap.
On Wednesday (Aug. 4), the Bronx emcee took to his Instagram Live to share his opinion on the Verzuz competition that went down at Madison Square Garden. The nearly 47 minute-long clip sees the “Make It Rain” star praise The LOX’s strategy and touches on the iconic moment in which Jadakiss countered Camron’s “Welcome to New York City” with the Ja Rule and Fat Joe-assisted “New York.”
“So I’m sitting there adjusting my mask. Just when I thought it couldn’t get better, Jadakiss comes on and goes, ‘Aye Harlem, I’m really outside. You know me, it’s Jada,” he recalls before singing the melody of “New York.” “The place erupts. I lose my mind. I’m going fucking apeshit crazy. I can’t control the passion. Now I was neutral, but when the shit comes on that I’m on, I fucking lose it.”
“…I almost pulled a Lil Mama and rang up in the ring,” he continued. “I wanted to smoke at that point. I wanted to smoke…When they dropped the shit, half the stadium looked at me. ‘Crack what’s good? What you gonna do?’ Brooklyn is staring. Harlem is staring.”
The night was such a monumental one that the emcee revisited an old favorite after the event: White Castle.
