Thumb through Tyler, The Creator’s Twitter account and you’re bound to come across a tweet — containing a lofty goal from years ago— that he’s accomplished.
It’s been nearly eleven years since Tyler took to Twitter hoping he’d land a collaborative Gangsta Grillz mixtape with DJ Drama. “I WANT A GANGSTA GRILLZ TAPE SO FUCKING BAD GOT DAMN,” he tweeted in December 2011. Tyler updated that tweet with a reply on Friday (June 25). “DONE. ALBUM,*” he tweeted as the release of his latest project Call Me If You Get Lost hit streaming services and stores across the country.
The album, Tyler’s sixth, has received rave reviews online. Many fans have mentioned Tyler seems to have elevated his skills even more this time around and enlisting DJ Drama to add his signature Gangsta Grillz ad-libs was a good decision.
During a recent Instagram Live, Tyler shared his admiration for Drama, rap music and Griselda rapper Westside Gunn. “Shoutout rap music, I love it. DJ Drama, I love you,” said Tyler. “What you did for rap…phenomenal. From all the Waynes, all the Dedications. From the [Pharrell], the [In My Mind: The Prequel] mixtape. To Clipse, for the We Got It For Cheap [series]. From Lupe’s mixtape run, the Farenheit to the Revenge Of The Nerds. To JAY-Z to Andre [3000], to Westside Gunn, for making me just want to rap again. I love rap, it changed niggas’ lives.”
In another IG video, Tyler calls Drama a “legend.” “This nigga just yelled over songs, years of needing this,” he said in the clip. “From the Waynes to the Jeezys, to the Ps, all the fuckin’ mixtapes. You’re a fucking God. I love you and I’m going to give you a hard hug once we’re done with this.”
Call Me If You Get Lost serves as the follow up LP to Tyler’s Grammy award-winning concept album Igor, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 in 2019. Currently, seven of the top ten songs on Apple Music’s Top 100 chart are from Call Me If You Get Lost.
