Freddie Gibbs is working on his next album and it’s going to be his “best produced” project yet, the hip hop mainstay told Mix Mag. In a recent cover feature for the U.K. outlet, Gibbs revealed the star-studded list of producers he’s teaming with for the effort.
“It’s another album of the year. I’m about to go and work with Pharrell next week. Madlib, Working On Dying, The Alchemist, Sevn Thomas, Hit-Boy. I just talked to [Mike Will Made It],” he told the outlet. “It’s gonna be the best produced album that I ever made.”
The Alfredo follow-up is called SSS, though Gibbs didn’t explain the meaning behind the title. The Gary, Indiana native also claimed that he’s the best to ever rap over Madlib’s production. He and the famed producer have joined forces a number of times over the years, most notably on their highly praised albums Piñata and Bandana; they’re even known collaboratively as MadGibbs.
“I think I’m the best ever to rap on a Madlib beat,” he said, also giving credit to MF DOOM.
“Rest in peace to MF DOOM,” he continued. “I feel like he gave me the measuring stick. He set the tone. When I was making Piñata. E veryone was talking about how he did the best shit and you know the competitor in me wanted to make the better album.”
As reported by REVOLT, Gibbs also reflected on his recent Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album and ultimately losing the coveted honor to Nas.
“If you’re gonna lose to somebody, you’re gonna want to lose to Nas,” he said, taking the loss in stride. “Nas is a hall of fame MC. If anything it just shows how great I am to lose to such an MC. I could’ve lost to Macklemore or something.”
Earlier this month, Gibbs dropped off his most recent single, “Big Boss Rabbit.” It’s unclear if the Mike Tyson-sampling track or “Gang Signs,” Gibbs’ recent collaboration with ScHoolboy Q, will land on SSS. Read his full feature here.
