Donald Trump is being sued for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection. As The Washington Times reported, a civil rights organization and the Democratic chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee believe his suspected participation in the insurrection violated a post-Civil War law designed to fight combat white supremacy. Ronald Giuliani, the Proud Boysand the Oath Keepers are also named in the suit.

The lawsuit, filed by the NAACP and Mississippi Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson, says Trump “mobilized and prepared supporters for an attack” alongside Giuliani and the two far-right extremist groups with hopes it would block Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election — a motion they believe was in violation of the Ku Klux Klan Act.

The statute, which was intended to protect African Americans against white supremacist violence, allows civil actions to be brought against those whose “force, intimidation, or threat” resulted in one’s failure to complete their office duties.

“The insurrection was the result of a carefully orchestrated plan by Trump, Giuliani and extremist groups like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, all of whom shared a common goal of employing intimidation, harassment and threats to stop the certification of the Electoral College,” the NAACP said. “They succeeded in their plan.”

Trump was the center of conversation over the weekend as Congressmen gathered at his second impeachment trial to determine his role in the Capitol riots. After days of arguments from impeachment managers, he was acquitted, but Thompson and the NAACP believe he should be punished.

The former president “needs to be held accountable for deliberately inciting and colluding with white supremacists to stage a coup in his continuing efforts to disenfranchise African-American voters,” the civil rights organization said.

“While the majority of Republicans in the Senate abdicated their responsibility to hold the president accountable, we must hold him accountable for the insurrection that he so blatantly planned,” added Thompson. “Failure to do so will only invite this type of authoritarianism for the anti-democratic forces on the far right that are so intent on destroying our country.”
