Black Lives Matter protesters were detained as they marched in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr on MLK Day. As NBC 4, New Yorkers gathered at noon on Monday (Jan. 18) to honor the civil rights activist, but were interrupted by officers who demanded their rally come to an end.
The demonstrators reportedly marched from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center to City Hall before NYPD attempted to disperse the crowd and started arresting them. A total of 28 arrests were made, according to authorities.
BLM protesters in Seattle were also taken into police custody following an MLK demonstration. The group of people spilled into the freeway, blocking traffic and prompting officers to respond. The cops attempted to control the crowd and escorted them away from the I-5 North collector-distributor road.
Trooper Rick Johnson — the spokesman for the Washington State Patrol — told Fox News that two vehicles were seized and a dozen individuals were arrested in the process. The captured individuals — who face various charges including obstruction, disorderly conduct and malicious mischief — were immediately released after the King County Jail refused to book them for unknown reasons.
BLM protests across the nation have often been shut down by law enforcement. The NYPD has specifically been the target of several investigations for their alleged abuse of Black demonstrators. After a recent probe uncovered their “indiscriminate, unjustified and repeated use of batons, pepper spray, bicycles and a crowd control tactic known as ‘kettling’ against peaceful protestors,” the attorney general filed a lawsuit against the police department.
“There is no question that the NYPD engaged in a pattern of excessive, brutal and unlawful force against peaceful protesters,” said Attorney General Letitia James. “Over the past few months, the NYPD has repeatedly and blatantly violated the rights of New Yorkers, inflicting significant physical and psychological harm and leading to great distrust in law enforcement.”
