Make no mistake — Kanye West gave REVOLT’s “Drink Champs” one of the biggest interviews this year. During the clip, he spoke to N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN about every thing imaginable, from creating a school and orphanage, to the infamous Taylor Swift moment, to his many other conflicts amongst his peers.
One name that came up throughout the lengthy sit-down was JAY-Z, who was (and still is) a major part of Kanye’s success, especially during the now-iconic days at Roc-A-Fella Records. They even touched on the creation of Ye’s Graduation standout “Big Brother,” which was an honest account of his relationship with his former label boss turned family. Even better was the fact that Roc-A-Fella co-founder Kareem “Biggs” Burke was also in the building.
One topic addressed was if Kanye West would ever appear on a future “Verzuz” episode, to which he made clear how victorious he’d be against anyone. He even suggested that he would need to either battle groups of his peers at once, or various versions of himself. In addition to the obligatory Drake question, N.O.R.E. asked if JAY-Z would ever be considered as a competitor, and Kanye made sure to pay his respects to his older counterpart and fellow billionaire:
“Oh, I didn’t think about that one. … Nah, cause that’s my boss, I would never go against Jay.”
Following a few memorable stadium listening sessions, this past August saw Ye liberate his long-awaited tenth studio LP Donda. That project saw a whopping 27 tracks with a wealth of contributions from the likes of JAY-Z, Fivio Foreign, Playboi Carti, Jay Electronica, Roddy Ricch, Lil Baby, the Weeknd, and DaBaby, among many others. The project was a huge commercial success for the Chicago icon, scoring him his tenth chart-topper on the Billboard 200 thanks to 309,000 first-week album equivalent units. The project has also since earned Ye a Gold certification.
