A new Beyoncé song can be heard in the latest trailer for King Richard, the Will Smith-starring biopic about Venus and Serena Williams’ upbringing and their coach/father, Richard Williams.
Smith, who portrays Richard and also co-produced the film, shared its new trailer on Twitter and YouTube on Thursday (Oct. 21). The actor was joined by the real-life Williams sisters to introduce the trailer, with Serena telling fans not to “miss out” on the movie. “What she said,” Venus seconded.
The stirring trailer provides a glimpse into the Williams sisters’ innate tennis talents and their father’s determination to take them from “prodigy to pro.” Even when one coach casts his doubts, saying, “Nobody’s gonna take that bet,” Richard is undeterred.
A snippet of Beyoncé’s song for the film, “Be Alive,” can be heard in the second half of the clip. The track appears to be orchestra-driven with Bey singing empowering verses like, “It feels so good to be alive, that’s why I live my life with pride.”
On Thursday, Serena also took to Twitter to share the clip.
“I’m SO excited for you to watch the new trailer for King Richard starring Will Smith and featuring the song ‘Be Alive’ by Beyoncé,” she wrote. “It’s in theaters and streaming exclusively on HBO Max November 19.”
Speaking with GQ, Serena previously said Smith was so convincing in the film’s portrayal as Richard, that there were times she had to remind herself the actor was not actually her father.
“My dad was and still is way before his time,” she said. “You see, when someone is different— when they don’t act or look how a person assumed they would — the first reaction is often fear. They think, ‘How do we break them?’ My dad anticipated that, but he would not allow himself or his family to be broken.”
