After finally accepting his loss in the presidential election, Donald Trump and the rest of the social media world learned he would also have to let go of something else he’s been accustomed to over the last few years: his Twitter account.

On Friday (Jan. 8), just two days after the insurrection at Capitol Hill, Twitter informed its users that the president would be permanently banned from their platform. “After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” they wrote in a statement.

“Hey Trump, I hope you spend the rest of your life in prison,” actor Christian Stolte tweeted. “OH I FORGOT, YOU CANT HEAR ME!”

In another reaction to Trump’s suspension, a Twitter user wrote, “HEY EVERYONE! Did you see what @realDonaldTrump just Tweeted??? Me neither!”

Politician Brian Caskey joined the conversation, adding, “It occurs to me that I have many things that Donald Trump does not have. I have a beautiful wife and two brilliant daughters. I have a successful business and a supportive family. I have a job past January 20th, and I *also* have a Twitter account.”

Earlier this week, Trump’s tweets — which incited the D.C. riots and spread unsupported claims about elections results — were blocked due to “risk of violence.” Twitter eventually made the decision to suspend his account altogether.

“In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action,” Twitter added in their statement. “Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.”
