While in-demand artists are frequently bombarded with requests for new music, no fan base in recent years has been quite as determined as Rihanna’s. The music mogul released her last LP Anti in 2016 and fans have become restless as anticipation builds for her ninth studio album. In several interviews, Rihanna has confirmed that she is in fact working on the record, but she’s not above having a little fun at her fans’ expense until it gets here.
On Wednesday (May 13), RiRi shared a promotional Instagram clip for Off Record sunglasses, which are now available through her Fenty brand. One follower quickly jumped in to ask, “WHERES THE ALBUM,” to which Rihanna replied, “I lost it.” Another fan attempted at reverse psychology, commenting, “DONT DROP DAT ALBUM.” However, Rihanna jokingly pointed the comment out to her loyal fanbase, responding, “Navy this who to blame, right here look.”
This isn’t the first time Rihanna has trolled her impatient fans. Back in November, she hopped on Instagram to reveal that 2019 “was quite an overwhelming” year and that she was “working on that ish called balance.”
Although fans expected R9 to be released last year, Rihanna has at least offered a few hints about the record. Speaking with Vogue, she shared that the album is sonically inspired by reggae.
“I like to look at it as a reggae-inspired or reggae-infused album. It’s not gonna be typical of what you know as reggae. But you’re going to feel the elements in all of the tracks,” she told the outlet. “Reggae always feels right to me. It’s in my blood. It doesn’t matter how far or long removed I am from that culture, or my environment that I grew up in; it never leaves.”
“I have been trying to get back into the studio. It’s not like I can lock myself in for an extended amount of time, like I had the luxury of doing before,” she continued. “I know I have some very unhappy fans who don’t understand the inside bits of how it works.”
