On Thursday (Apr. 9), REVOLT Media & TV Chairman Sean “Diddy” Combs” will host a town hall titled “State Of Emergency: The State of Black America & Coronavirus” at 11 pm ET/8 pm PT to discuss how COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting the African-American community.
Joining Combs for the two-hour live event will be Angela Rye, Big Sean, Reverend Al Sharpton, Fat Joe, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Congressperson Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Killer Mike, Charles Blow, Van Jones and others. Senator Kamala Harris will introduce the event, as well.
REVOLT reports, “The discussion will focus on dealing with the public health issue, the low-income effect, incarceration, and economic relief, and the mental toll of quarantining.”
Last week, Combs took to Instagram to urge his followers to help people who are fighting on the frontlines for our safety.
“We can’t just sit back and leave our healthcare workers abandoned and unprotected,” he captioned his video on Instagram. “Over the next few days I’ll be locked in and focused on finding ways to directly support our healthcare workers but I don’t have all the answers. If you want to help or have any great ideas, please reach out to me now! God bless us all.”
If you have been keeping up with news surrounding COVID-19, you’ve noticed that African-Americans are dying from the virus at an alarming rate, as compared to other races.
Michigan, North Carolina, Louisiana, Virginia, Illinois, Minnesota and Arkansas have released COVID-19 numbers by race.
According to ABC News: “Louisiana released data showing that while African-Americans only make up roughly 32% of the population, they account for 70% of the deaths in the state. In Michigan, African-Americans have died at more than eight times the rate of white people, despite making up only 14% of the state’s population.”
The news outlet continues, “In Illinois, 58% of Cook County deaths from COVID-19 were black though the population is 23% black, and 72% of Chicago deaths were black patients though the city is 32% black.”
