Shyheim, also known as the Rugged Child, has been released from prison after serving a five-year bid.

The Wu-Tang Clan affiliate announced the news via Instagram, where he shared pictures of reuniting with his family.

“Been waiting so long for this moment! Finally free spending time with my daughter and family,” he wrote on Monday (Jan. 6).

“It’s been 25 years since me and my big cousin understanding been in the same room room free I could cry but I won’t I’ll just smile behind my eyes,” he wrote in another post.

In April of 2013, Shyheim was arrested after police found heroin and a .32 caliber revolver at his home. Then, on New Year’s Day in 2014, Shyheim was involved in a hit-and-run that left a New York man dead. He was driving a friend’s 1996 Volvo S80 when he reportedly sped through a stop sign and into another car, killing a Staten Island man named Felipe Avila Olea. The rapper then fled the scene.

About a month later, Shyheim turned himself in and pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and his past drug and weapons charges. In August 2014, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison, where he was to serve both manslaughter and gun and drug charges concurrently. After fulfilling a five-year bid, he was released from a New York state prison on Monday (Jan. 6).

Shyheim initially gained fame as a teenager, becoming one of the youngest rappers ever affiliated with Wu-Tang and frequently collaborating with Method Man and Ghostface Killah. At just 14 years old, the rapper released his debut album AKA the Rugged Child, which peaked at No. 7 on the Top R&B/ Hip Hop albums chart. He later went on to release The Lost Generation in 1996, Manchild in 1999, The Greatest Story Never Told in 2004 and Disrespectfully Speaking in 2009.
