Back in March, Lil Nas X brought the world to a halt with his latest single “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)” — mainly thanks to its accompanying video. Today, the Atlanta star follows that with “SUN GOES DOWN,” an upbeat, pop-esque number that sees him delivering inspirational lyrics for those who consider themselves outcasts due to being different:
“I’d rather run away, don’t wanna lie, I don’t wanna life, send me a gun, and I’ll see the sun, you need an instant ease, from the life where you got plenty, of every hurt and heartbreak, you just take it all to the face…
I know you want to cry, but there’s much more to life than dying, over your past mistakes, and people who threw dirt on your face…”
The track also comes with a matching visual which, as Lil Nas X explained on social media, is about elevating his depressed former self:
“in the “sun goes down” video i go back in time to visit a younger version self who’s struggling inside, hating himself, & doesn’t want to live anymore. i try my best to uplift him. … this one is really special to me.”
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’re more than familiar with Nas X’s breakthrough single “Old Town Road,” a Billy Ray Cyrus-featured, genre-bending number that has since become one of the biggest-selling singles of all time, charting in every country imaginable (most of which saw him at number one) and collecting an Amazon warehouse worth of Gold, Platinum, and Diamond plaques. That then led to Nas X’s debut EP 7, which also contained the well-received singles “Panini” and “Rodeo” with Cardi B. Currently, he’s putting the final touches on his first official album, also said to be titled Montero.
