In addition to his legendary catalog of music, this past decade as seen Trae Tha Truth fighting for racial equality, non-violence, and many other issues important to the Black community — both in his hometown of Houston and the country as a whole. This week, he continues to push that message with a new single titled “Protect Our Women,” a heartfelt cut that also acts as an ode to Breonna Taylor and all of our Black queens who’ve lost their lives at the hands of law enforcement:
“If it’s love, then why we risk it to lose, it’s what we choose, so disgusted as I look on the news, on the cool, I can’t imagine tryna step in your shoes, you a queen, but it’s crazy how we livin’ confused, you don’t deserve the pain, this is for Breonna, they murdered, then she was in her sleep, cold-blooded, she ain’t deserve it, it got me feeling weak…/”
Shot by Miaci and Tanner Probus and directed by Trae himself, the accompanying clip for “Protect Our Women” begins with a shot of Trae happening upon a women being mishandled by an officer, before he intervenes and a shot is fired. The clip then shows the ABN emcee taking part in protests while many others that the song is dedicated to — including Tamika Mallory, Yandy Smith, Porsha Williams, the mothers of those fallen, and more — can be seen leading the frontlines for the Black Lives Matter movement.
Back in February, Trae Tha Truth teamed up with fellow activist Mysonne for the joint album If You’re Scared Stay Inside. That release saw 14 socially and politically charged cuts with contributions from Jim Jones, Black Thought, Jay’ton, TJ Boyce, Pastor Stephen A. Green, Ink, Nhale, and Sky Da God.
