It’s been a little more than a couple years since Ice Cube released his tenth studio album Everythang’s Corrupt, his first album since 2010’s I Am The West. Released via Interscope, Everythang’s Corrupt saw 16 tracks with additional assists from Shameia Crawford and Too $hort, and was preceded by the singles “Arrest The President” and “Good Cop, Bad Cop.” Since then, the Los Angeles hip hop legend has been taking his message to the political landscape, becoming one of the more vocal artists in regards to bringing needed resources into our community — something that he continues to do post-Trump.
Today, Ice Cube makes a grand return to music with his new single “Trying To Maintain,” which keeps with the socially charged subject matter while also sending a message to many of Cube’s more recent detractors:
“To everybody tryin’ to maintain, with a little Mary Jane on the campaign, we buy you in the fast lane, only act like this ‘cause the black ain’t, fuck your cancel culture, bitch, you can’t cancel a soldier, quit/
See, I thought I told ya, drunk or sober, tell you when it’s over, slap the shit out a troller, I kill shit like Ebola/”
During a recent appearance on MAJIC 107.9’s “Ryan Cameron Uncensored” show, Ice Cube revealed that President Biden’s administration have reached out to him in regards to his polarizing Contract with Black America proposal — while it’s in the planning stages, it does appear that Cube will soon have the new leader of the free world as an audience for his ideas:
“We haven’t talked yet. We’re just starting to figure out when we can have this meeting and how we’re gonna have it. … I believe it’ll go down sometime this month.”
