Back in October, REASON unveiled his debut studio LP New Beginnings, a masterpiece of an album that saw 14 tracks and additional features from ScHoolboy Q, Rapsody, Ab-Soul, Mereba, Vince Staples, and more. Just before the new year arrived, the Carson emcee decided to release “Extinct (Extended),” an upgraded version of the Isaiah Rashad and JID-assisted album cut “Extinct.” The new version sees REASON adding on contributions from Jack Harlow, Denzel Curry, Joey Bada$$, and Westside Boogie, all of whom deliver bars perfect for our transition into the new year:
“Look, say she don’t know REAS’, that shit too insane, old school, put my shorty on Biggie like Pootie Tang, do ya thang, cap in all the raps, that shit won’t stop, rest in peace, Breonna Taylor, her killers, they shoulda knocked/
Wait Jack, I’m in some pussy, I was knee-deeper than Funkadelics, I am legend, that explain all the will that a nigga carry…/”
What makes the song even more momentous is the fact that its producer, Devin Williams, sampled Galt MacDermot’s “Cathedral” — the same sample that MF DOOM used on “Pennyroyal,” an instrumental track taken from the Metalfingers Presents: Special Herbs series. As the world now knows, it was revealed on the same day of REASON’s latest drop that MF DOOM had passed on back in October, bringing hip hop to a screeching halt.
In addition to New Beginnings, this year also saw REASON teaming up with Boogie and Ab-Soul on the powerful cut “Trapped In.” He also contributed to Dreamville’s “Still Up” and “Revenge” (both of which are taken from Revenge of the Dreamers III: Director’s Cut), as well as Deante’ Hitchcock’s “Weighing Me Down.”
Press play on REASON’s “Extinct (Extended)” below. In related news, REASON recently took to social media to reveal that his next album would contain “95% story telling” — I’m sure we all can look forward to that release.
