Tonight looks to be one for the ages, as Monica is set to battle longtime frenemy Brandy in the latest episode of Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s “Verzuz” series. As we’ve begun to see from current artists who take part, Monica has decided to precede the main event with some new music titled “TRENCHES,” which features fellow Atlanta native Lil Baby and sees production from The Neptunes. The track essentially sees Monica singing about loving a man that’s still in the streets:
“Love is what you make it, I’ll give you my heart if you promise that you won’t break it, I’ma keep it real with everyone, it ain’t no fakin’, I was trying to give it to you, you was trying to take it…/”
“TRENCHES” marks Monica’s first official single since last year’s “Commitment” and “Me + You,” both of which were intended to appear on her yet-to-be-released ninth studio LP Chapter 38. Her previous album, Code Red, was released back in 2015 and saw collaborations with Lil Wayne, Missy Elliott, Akon, Timbaland, and more. Career wise, Monica has sold 5.3 million albums in the United States and counting with plenty of plaques and awards that span four decades.
As previously reported by REVOLT, Monica spoke to “Entertainment Tonight” about her and Brandy’s long-storied beef, revealing that those past issues may by discussed during “Verzuz”:
“We’ve long removed ourselves from the dramatics of it, but we’re gonna have a very in-depth conversation that may possibly be shared — even with the audience — because there’s a lot that happens. The fans have no idea what really took place — what really caused the initial friction.”
Fans can press play on Monica’s “TRENCHES” below. her battle with Monica begins at 8pm ET on both Apple Music and Verzuz TV’s Instagram page.
