Brandy and Monica are set to partake in the next installment of Verzuz at Tyler Perry Studios on Monday (Aug. 31) at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. and R&B lovers are rejoicing.
Fliers for the forthcoming Verzuz set Twitter ablaze on Saturday (Aug. 22). Naturally, everyone began placing their bets on who they think will come out on top. Folks also shared their reactions to the announcement using funny memes and imagining what it’d be like to watch them finally battle it out live and in-person.
“I want to point out that Brandy and Monica both have versions of the flyer where they each come first,” Kimberly N. Foster, editor-in-chief of For Harriet noted in a tweet. “It’s 1999 again!” Brandy versus Monica is a battle that Verzuz fans have relentlessly asked for and is the one battle that many people are looking forward to.
For 20 years, Brandy and Monica have been the subject of beef rumors since the release of their 1998 Grammy award-winning hit song, “The Boy Is Mine.” Brandy has maintained that “The Boy Is Mine” is her song and she reportedly felt a way when Monica chose to title her sophomore effort The Boy Is Mine, too.
Checking Apple Music, however, “The Boy Is Mine” on Monica’s album is unavailable for streaming. It is available to stream through Brandy’s Never Say Never, though.
Nevertheless, both ladies are vocal powerhouses and have accumulated their share of R&B smash hit records and Grammy award nods at the height of their careers.
“The only battle or Verzuz they want to see with me is me against Brandy, and the reality is, people have put us against each other for twenty-something years,” Monica said in a recent interview with V103. “That would be the only thing that makes sense to me because I’ve been trying to tell people for about 25 years, you can like both! You’re going to turn this into 1998 all over again and I have no interest in that.”
