Sac Town spitta Mozzy is back with a new album today (May 1) titled Beyond Bulletproof. He has a studio work ethic akin to the late great Tupac. Given this fact, it’s really no surprise that the Northern California superstar is here with new material. The last time we heard a Mozzy solo album was last year’s Internal Affairs. Blood Cuzzins, which was a collaboration album with Tsu Surf, also dropped in 2019.
A few tracks from the new album arrived earlier this year. The songs “Overcame,” “Boyz to Men,” “Pricetag,” “I Ain’t Perfect,” and “Tunnel Vision” all arrived in the first half of 2020 and include visuals that highlight the rapper’s stomping grounds.
A product of an upbringing that included both gang influences as well as the teachings of the Black Panthers, Mozzy is one of the most relatable rappers around. In an Instagram video promoting the new project he said, “My music wouldn’t be my music without Sacramento.”
He was raised by his grandmother in the Oak Park neighborhood of California’s state capitol. His music is equal parts gangster and activism. One of the causes he supports is cash bail reform. He had a listening party on Instagram Live where he shared new music and discussed how he put up his own money to bail out inmates. A former convict himself, this is a cause that hits close to home.
Beyond Bulletproof includes features from G Herbo, King Von, Blxst, Eric Bellinger, Lil Poppa, Polo G, and Shordie Shordie. Production is from Jay P Bangz, Mook on the Beats, SephGotTheWaves, India Got Them Beats, Tariq Beats, Musik MajorX, and Jared Scharff, among others. Much like his past albums and EPs since 2016, the project was released on Mozzy records in partnership with Empire Distribution.
