TikTok has proven several times over that it has the power to break an artist’s record with viral dance videos. Case and point, K Camp’s “Lottery (Renegade)” single and subsequent rise in popularity when the song took off on the mobile app last year. Now, the rapper’s latest album KISS 5 arrived today (April 24).
The album includes guest appearances from several noteworthy artists. “Trill Love” features Joe Trufant, Jacquees stops by on “What’s On Your Mind,” and Jeremih assists on “1 Mo Time,” to name a few. Other featured artists include Wale, 6lack, Ari Lennox, Yung Bleu, and Yella Beezy, among others.
The project is a joint venture between K Camp’s RARE Sound, Empire, and Interscope. Camp’s label shares a name with 2018 project RARE Sound, the first to include Empire as a partner. However, the rapper’s last release was 2019’s Wavy 2 Kritical.
For years, Camp aka Float God was stuck in a frustrating production deal that prevented him from fully expressing his creativity and being properly compensated for his work. After fulfilling his obligations and establishing his own imprint, he’s been able to have more creative control.
Production from beatsmiths Bankroll Got It, Bobby Kritical, J-RoD, Nash B, Natra Average, Reazy Renegade, Retro Future, Sean Momberger and Swayyvo is featured throughout this project. The song “Black Men Don’t Cheat” featuring 6lack, Ari Lennox and Tink arrived last month, and has been simmering ever since.
The trap influenced R&B that has become so prominent over the past few years has helped Camp gain recognition since he’s been making this style of music for years. His haunting vocals and romantically leaning song topics are a good soundtrack for today’s complicated relationships. The artist’s style is unique and is on fall display on this latest release.
Vibe out to KISS 5 here.
