This year has already seen a few dope singles from Anderson .Paak, including “Lockdown” with Jay Rock, “Cut Em In” with Rick Ross, and “Yuuuu” with Busta Rhymes. Now, he delivers a funky new cut titled “JEWELZ,” which sees production from The Breed, Shucati, and legendary producer Timbaland. The track comes off as a tribute of sorts to the women who liberate themselves everyday:
“You know you kinda cute with the bald head, got a lil’ booty in the Balmains, you know how to move with them long legs, bring your lil’ crew, we can all rage/
The Tesla ride smoother than the PCH, I think that I like it with the makeup on, I know that she used to all the cheapskates, but I just wanna ball, show off and show off…/”
“JEWELZ” and the aforementioned singles follow last year’s Ventura, Anderson .Paak’s fourth studio LP that saw 11 tracks and features from André 3000, Smokey Robinson, Lalah Hathaway, Jazmine Sullivan, Sonyae Elise, Brandy, and Nate Dogg. That album also won .Paak a Grammy for Best R&B Album, as well as a top five spot on the Billboard 200 thanks to 55,000 album equivalent units sold during its first week of release.
In a recent interview with REVOLT, producer-engineer Focus spoke on the making of Ventura and how it differs from its 2018 predecessor (and .Paak’s Aftermath debut) Oxnard:
“Just the fact he’s singing more. It’s more soulful. The records and the approaches are going to feel a lot more like what he did on Malibu. It’s going to feel a lot more like what they’re used to with the transition from Breezy Love Joy to Anderson .Paak. His true audience will understand this album. I have at least four or five favorites on Ventura. I am very much in love with Ventura as a project.”
