It’s pretty dope to see Lupe Fiasco continuing to deliver dope rhymes simply for his love of the art form. In celebration of Halloween, the Chicago veteran dropped off a new freestyle titled “Not A Costume,” which was created over the instrumental for JAY-Z and Just Blaze’s Blueprint² classic “Hovi Baby.” As such, Lupe begins said freestyle by congratulating the Brooklyn legend for his recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction before getting into the multi-layered, rewind-worthy subject matter that he’s become so popular for:
“He can be so cold-blooded, colorblind when he bang, high thug it, black and white appetite, blood dripping from his fangs, you can see it, synestegic, broke the microphone, go and get this bitch a cane, he on menace minutes, go on, send this flip of cane…
To the popo, strawin’ that bitch’s neck, sippin’ her like a margarita made out of arterias, I’d oughta eat her, deeper than the parts of pizza from Chicago, nigga, werewolf got Jasper graphics in his hairdo, ow, devil can’t handle any curses, I went to Halloween as a vaccinated person…”
Last year saw Lupe liberating two EPs for fans to enjoy — HOUSE with Kaelin Ellis and TAPE TAPE with Soundtrakk. His last official album, DROGAS Wave, made landfall back in 2018 and contained 24 songs with a wealth of contributions from Nikki Jean, Damian Marley, Crystal Torres, Elena Pinderhughes, and more. In addition a slew of other notable freestyles and one of the more surprising hip hop feuds seen this year, this summer also saw Lupe announcing a 10-track album that he intended to create “from scratch” within 24 hours. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to complete the task in that timeframe — with that said, it’s still hopeful to hear the final product sometime soon.
