Lupe Fiasco didn’t complete his challenge to record an entire album in 24 hours, but he’s feeling great about what he’s created thus far. On Thursday (Aug. 12), he told fans that the album will be his Illmatic aka his version of Nas’ classic debut album.
“Its my Illmatic,” he wrote on Twitter. “No cap.” In a second tweet, he corrected his previous post, explaining that the project was going to be his and producer Soundtrakk’s Illmatic. “ I’m not at all exaggerating either,” Lupe added in a third tweet.
The claims follow a slew of updates about the status of the 10-track project he was attempting to create on Monday (Aug. 9).
At the time, the Drogas Wave emcee took a break from freestyling over classic beats and randomly tweeted that he was going to record “an album from scratch in 24 hours.” He proceeded to give fans updates after the completion of each song, but by the day’s end, he admitted that he only recorded half of the album and wasn’t going to meet his deadline.
“Aight…I’m callin it…did some CRAZY damage, but the deadline got the best of me…,” he tweeted on Monday night. “Learned a LOT…a veritable roller coaster of high level athletic intellectualism…I’ll lay it all out in a Q&A on one of my social medias…stay tuned…Good night.”
The following day (Aug. 10), the Chicago rapper took some time off, revealing his plans to complete the second half of the album on Wednesday (Aug. 11). Hours into his studio return, he hinted at a trilogy named after his 2015 single “Mural,” a song that many deem one of the best records of his career.
In subsequent posts, Lupe showed his makeshift studio as well as some hilarious, random memes about his progress.
